So I got home from work today and decided to pull the Turnigy 80amp ESC & 3520kv motor (WP, for 1/10) out of my Slash (2wd) and give it a whirl in the Mega Granite...

Overall I'm very pleased with this system (in the Slash). The temp stays reasonable, the power is just a bit better than the Velineon system I replaced with it, and it was inexpensive. I like it enough that I was considering buying a second kit and putting it in the Granite, but figured it would be prudent to try it first, so that's what I did today. One unexpected thing I felt necessary was to oblong the lower motor mount hole (just a little with a small, round file), as the gear mesh was just too tight for my liking. Ok, no biggie. I got everything mounted and synced-up the radio, and out to the street we went. I was running the Banditos on it because I was planning some speed runs in the street, and hate murdering those stock off-roaders. I also wanted to be able to comment on whether or not the Banditos ballooned much (they did not, but it's a fairly mild system). Lastly I decided to run the 14 tooth sprocket (good thing!). Speed and power was improved enough that I had to tighten the slipper a lot to keep it from getting smoked. If I hit a bump and throttled up just right, I got a satisfying wheelie outta the little guy. All was looking good, until I checked the heat. The ESC was hovering around 115 degrees F, which is ok (mix of high speed runs on street and some grass bashing), but the motor temp got up to just about 180, which is too hot. I know, maybe 180 could be considered right on the line (by some), but I'm running the SMALLEST PINION! This means (to me) that there is zero wiggle room with gearing. If I want more speed, I can't gear up for it without risking an overheat, which seems assured.
So it seems I need to step up the system I put in this truck. I'm guessing my Turnigy system is just a bit underpowered for this little 4x4? I'm not going to need a 1/8 scale system, am I?
