Put a screw or something in the eye hole, grab it with a pair of pliars, and twist it out. You could also just cut the plastic with a pair of side cutters.

you can then squeeze the new one in with the pliars.

Broke my first rod connector under less than aggressive conditions. A little concerned about that.
