I use them on motors with a 5mm shaft. Saved me quite a few times where your pinion might come loose and back up into the mount or motor itself. I don't need them on 8mm motor shafts since the grubs are larger and the pinion usually goes on backwards.

As mentioned above you don't really "NEED" this part but it does help...especially when you are first learning how to put a pinion on properly so that it stays. A loose pinion can do a lot of damage whether it spins off backwards into the motor or forward into everything else. This little piece can save a motor and/or motor mount at the least.
