2 questions what's the difference between D5 and D8 pinion and what center spur and pinion for castle 8s with 1717 1650kv for speed and bashing. Right now I'm running stock. 27t for speed.

D5 pinion fits Spektrum motors with 5mm shafts.
D8 pinion fits Spektrum motors with 8mm shafts.
You don't want either of these with a non-Spektrum motor.
I'd recommend experimenting with different pinions since the heat build up will be based on your driving style. Assuming the stock 46T spur gear, mid/low 20s would be a good place to start for pinion size if running 6S, IMO. Lower for 8S.
