FWIW, that $900 GT is currently sitting outside in the rain! I managed to keep it for nearly 30 years, indoors..I finally got tired of looking at it and threw it outside!!
Well, I must still be doing it right then..back in 95 when I bought the GT, I was driving a 77 Monte Carlo I bought for $500. Today, I'm driving a 06 Scion xb I paid $3k for 3 years ago..It's an unspoken rule in the mtb community... If your bike doesn't cost more than your car you're doing it wrong.
