No.
But if you're concerned.. just repurpose an used laundry detergent conditioner (or anything similar) by cutting a piece of plastic off of it in the shape roughly equal to the portion of battery that's sticking out.
Then use some strong double -sided tape to secure it in place.

Should be enough of protection.

Yes, it is. How big a problem? No idea but Murphy will strike eventually.

I would put something under the battery case at a minimum. And I would avoid gravel.
