Is it safe or recommended to cover the motor backing plate hole?

I notice on some brushless motors there’s a hole with an exposed bearing on the backing plate, and some have no hole at all. Is there a design reason for this, and is it safe to cover the hole with a piece of tape to keep dirt and debris out of the motor’s bearings?

Are they threaded for a screw. And yes you can cover the hole.

Yes actually a great idea.
I put a drop of oil, , wipe area clean, and place some electrical tape or Gorilla tape over the BB's hole. The High temps can cause electrical tape to come off sometimes.
An exposed endbell BB can be an advantage when it comes time to replace tye BB. A sealed or unexposed BB, also has an advantage that it wont get all dirty wet or foulded out. And Water or dirt won't get past it into the BB. But you need to use the "Bread Trick" to remove that BB.
Motors last for years if you stay on top of both BB's. Replacing them way before they fail and brick the whole motor.
I only go for Ceramic BB's when I do swap them out. IMHO, worth the few coins more. Always buy Motor Specific BB's whatever you go with. They have a High ABEC rating for the higher temps and RPMS of a motor.

I find that exposed BB's at the endbell wear out faster. Sealed off they remain cleaner and lubed for longer. Most of my motors are sealed endbells. My choice is sealed for this reason. And with them, I believe the Pinion side BB's usually are the first to go. Only because it is Not sealed off.
It cannot be, simply because of the rotor's output shaft/pinion.

I think it has to do with side load pressure from turning all that wight. When jumping or a good tumbling crash. All that load from the gears meshing. Just makes sense. Oh and the heat build up.
I even use shoe goo to cover those end ball openings. I also applied 2 layers of duck tape bhind the motor/ slipper cluch assembly. And the slot on bottom af chassi. Dirt free at the end bell now

Some say opening the bottom actually allows dirt within the Power Module.. When they tried it? So they end up placing some tape over the hole. And it stayed cleaner longer. IDK myself however.
My 6s rigs all have an opening there for the spur. But 6s rigs have the pin/spur completely exposed anyway.

A slight dusting goes on. But absolutely no build up happens. All bigger sand and dirt gets ejected from the spinning gears. And since I did the duck tape . Very clean, you could eat off it🤔🫣

I guess it matters where you bash too????(y)
Most definitely, I try to avoid water and sand. Brown dirt and I jump alot off of piles of wood chips. Maintenance crew in Riverside park and Hamilton Park are always dumping big 3ft all the way up to 12ft high piles. I help to spread the stuff for them.
Even the piles of dirt they dump. I just can't seem to get paid for all the hard work I do?

I did the slot mod i still get junk under it and the motor
You have to stop the dirt from coming in the back of the slipper clutch case wear it goes up against the frame and part of the shock tower. Dirt will still get in, nothing like before. I used 2 layers of 3m duck tape. Or 1 layer of gorilla tape.

I also made this to stop the steering from locking up do to rocks and woodchips. Used the screw hole on the servo mount. Also made the rear shock/ driveshaft protection. 1mm lexan from Amazon. Steering has never got stuck on stupid since.

I RC'ed my RC10GT at Riverside Park many years ago. During my Lunch break. They are a bit stuffy up that way. I wasn't greeted well by some on lookers for some reason. But my Nitro rig with a Tuned Pipe, can be noisey for sure.

Yes they can be these days.
They hated me with my hpi baja ss5b last motor was a ESP 30.5 4 bolt championship ported 2mm+ stuff crack with a cpi center pipe. I had to sell it after my second major spine surgery.
