3.5mm female bullet connector works as well (it's just a brass tube). It's easier for me to get more consistent holes with a tube rather than using a soldering iron.

I do number of holes based on the amount of air in the tire. For low profile tires like short course or Katars I do 2, MT tires will get 3/4
