I have to rebuild my diffs. I am wondering how tight should the screws be on the lid of the diff housing?

How much oil should be in the diff housing?

How do I clean the internals of the diff?

How do I tell if something is wrong with the internals?

Going in order.

Hand tight, don't be a gorilla about it and strip them out. Just like anything else.

I fill it up to where its oozing out the sides when I'm tightening it up.

Remove all the planets and spiders, use WD-40 and compressed air. Don't let any of the internals blow out of your hands whilst doing that.

You'll know if something is wrong almost instantly once you're done, no brainer.

snug the plastic on mine was stripped from the factory and I replaced the bolts with 4-40 a little longer than original worked great.

fill it up the whole way

as mentioned in the video alcohol works

look for worn parts, main problems in this are the plastic gears and the bearings.
EDIT I have a nack for typing answer right behind another person!

Thanks yall! I think I need to redo the tightness. I tend to be a gorilla :D

If the oil in the diff is dark / black is that normal?

Careful not to bend the yokes when you take them, they are real easy to bend and can cause Tighter mesh.

Should likely just replace them when you rebuild, careful not to overtighten the screws on the yoke as well.

Mine were overtighened from new leading to my rear diff failing.

Is there any chance that those flakes will sometimes 'lock' the gears up?
the flakes are usually very tiny however it’s possible for a larger chip to bind the metal gear mesh but it should be fairly easy to see. Do you have a bearing that’s locked Or a bearing seat that is bad?
