is max4 overkill for 8s?

looking at the max 4 combo on sale at hobbywing rn.

Going to be putting into an m2c outcast 8s

will only be running 8s, for stunting and jumping

should I just wait for max5 to hit on sale or is the max4 worth it for 8s?

This is just my personal perspective but, if it's foreseeable that the max5 will be on sale as well, I would wait for that. The max4 comes at a premium because it goes to 12 (though there is a hack to make the max5 run on up to 12S) so unless it's 50% off, I don't see the point of getting such a large ESC if you're not going to make use of its capabilities. That's my $0.02, curious to see what others think.

IMHO you don't need a Max4. Personally I run a max5 v1 with a TP 1010kv motor in my Outcast 8s and it's an absolute blast to drive. I know the new Max5 G2 are capable of 12s and the BEC is now 8.4v plus they are sensored which is nice plus. What's the price difference between the Max4 and the Max5 G2?

Max4 with 560kv is $577

Max5 isnt on sale rn but is $390 with different motor choices

also does the 560 fit with m2c steering?

looks like 560 would fit with certain mounts

Not 100% sure on that. I know m2c made different bellcranks to adjust for the new 12s capable sensored motors which are 118mm in length. Might be pushing it with 125mm

Max 4 definitely a waste of money and for no gains tbh. Especially if you will stick with 8s, it's like paying double the price of an xlx2 for worse performance.
