What exactly is timing?
How is it adjusted and what does it do?
Any suggestions or guidance appreciated.

Timing gives the brushless motor more rpm and with that comes more heat build up in the motor faster. Some esc have timing adjustments in the programming. What exactly is timing?

That makes sense. I guess overheating is the electric equivalent of spark knock. Its the advancement or retard of pulse in relation to the rotation of the rotor.. advanced timing pulses prior to the magnet reaching a given point, (the energized coil).. retarding timing does the opposite..
This applies in engines as well.. obviously it relates to piston position though...
