2021 Soldering Irons

Well, halfway through a new ESC plug install my solder stopped melting. My old iron still seems hot but must not be hot enough. Time for a new one.

My only use for a soldering iron is RC plugs so I don't need anything super capable or expensive, but would like decent quality. I found some old threads with a forum search but all of the recommendations seem to be discontinued models. I figured I'd ask the experts.

What should I buy?

you really only need a good 40watt iron, I have a hobbico, look on amazon or ebay or hit your local hardware store

Ignoring your requirement to not be super capable these T12 units are really impressive:

They take loads of different tips go really hot with great contro, heat up in >2secs and then drop back down to standby temperature when not being used.

Does it have an on/off switch?

Has a plug...lol...that is how you turn it on and off.

I find that i can go up to 10 awg wire with my TS100, only have to break out the hakko 888d on the larger stuff

Or get the $20 one I listed (works great) and with the savings - buy $80 in cool stuff for the Arrma

Are going solder large connectors? Like ec/ic5 or 7mm antispark connectors?

I've got the Hakko @jondilly1974 linked (and it's great), but I solder many other things besides battery ends.

I also have a hakko but for large connectors its still inadequate for getting a proper high quality solder joint.

You are a genius. I tried my mini torch and it was way easier. Not sure why I hadn't thought of this.
