So, I have never done a build thread or any type of write up…. So please bear with me as I stutter through this…. I am lacking in photos of some parts of the procedure…. But I will assume you get the idea since those are the basic parts of painting any Rc body….

Get yourself a clear body… since we are painting the inside and outside of the body, we need to start inside…the outside a,ready has the protective film… don’t remove the outside protective film… until after the inside is 100% complete….

As always, wash the inside of the body with a mild soap (dish soap)… I use a sponge with a scouring pad on the one side…. Rinse fully and dry….
On the inside, I had to mask off the windows. I bought the stickers to do so on eBay…. Well they were at least an 1/8th of and inch shy on all sides…. So masking tape and a sharp razor to rescue…. I can’t stress this enough, a SHARP RAZOR is super important during any process….
First layer of paint was silver…. Nothing special… just tamiya bright silver…. I do thin THIN coats till the small can was depleted….

Here are the colors I used for the body..

After the silver was done and dried… it was time to shoot the black…. I just do black for personal reasons… no need if you don’t want. I just think it looks better…
Once the black is sprayed, and dried for a good 24 hours. I tape off the bottom edges of the body to help with overspray when I do the outside….
Peel off the outside film…. You can try and cut around the windows I guess, but I re-mask them with tape… i mask off windows and that was it… I sprayed the whole body with the metallic red first… I did 3 light coats…. Then I brushed on the proline MARS RED…. Then shot another coat of the METALLIC RED. Then another of the MARS RED… don’t ask me why besides I liked the color tones I achieved… after that, I poured a glass of wine, sparked one up and worked on an idea…. So that’s when it all came together and I had a plan… sort of. Hahaha

I chose the color for a few reasons… one, they seemed period correct for whatever sudo make this truck is…. Two, I could see them from a good distance away… hahaha. I was gonna do black and red, 1 & 2 kind of knocked that down….

This is where you have to decide where you want your rust…. Yes, I added rust to the outside, but that might flake off. It’s usually done on hard bodies…. So taking this in to account, I decided to paint some rust where I wanted to be…. I used the METALLIC COPPER first, then used the PEARL ORANGE over that…. Spotty and messy like rust might be….

Let me tell you…. Watching pint dry is not fun…. And this was only the beginning… ugh. Haha

So next, after the rusty and prime red base coat is finished and dried…. You have to mask off how you want your body panels… this takes some planning or clever masking… granted, this paint job is supposed to be weathered, you don’t want to just overspray the hell out of it….

After you get your masking done, and all the edges pressed and secured… I use the back side of my hobby knife… it a little rounded but has that good edge to get in there… (watch your overlaps… this is where paint bleed happens) now you get to start the fun creative stuff with the the first process of the rust….

I don’t have a picture, but I used the pink salt in the grinder… it was what they had at the local 7-11… I grinder about half the bottle on corse, and used the rest as whole chunks….
get yourself a bigger paint brush from the pack I will show in a minute… also get a cup of water…. You want to "paint" the water onto the body where you want the salt to stick…. I use the different size salt granulates to do different things…. Big chunks to block bigger areas of paint and add the most texture….then I use the smaller stuff to make the small rust spots and dust the body to get a texture to the paint…. You’ll see the finer stuff more on the yellow panels….

The red part of the body is the oldest part of the truck… hence more rust… the yellow are replacement parts that were done sometime down the road…. And the hood…. Well the hood was my great attempt at a lace style hood…. Hahaha didn’t do what I wanted but I still think it looks alreight… it was supposed to be like when I we were younger and we would put the fiberglass cowl hood on a chevelle or nova…. (That’s right, I’m from a Chevy family)

Here are some of my in process pics…

Sorry won’t let me do more pictures in one shot… so I will continue…

The salt you want to leave on for as much of the process as possible….. when you brush it off,I’m used a brush to clean my motorcycle wheels…. Be ruff… scrape and scuff it up…. That will give you the texture you want… the scrapes in the paint make it look authentic….

With the hood, I used leggings I bought off Amazon…. Just find the style and pattern you like and have fun…. Had 3 extra sets in the package that my wife now has. Hahaha so it’s a win win for me!

Now starts using the rust…. I went with the logical areas a truck would rust… also where the fender flairs meet the body, it’s a weird point. So the rust helps with the color transitions there….
Paint it on… be liberal… it’s iron paint… it’s thick…

Sorry, went a little picture crazy…. Hahaha alright… there is a lot of playing around and making stuff look poopy in the right way…. I have been a fan of cutting the windows since my scalers days…. Also good for venting…. Also the back window being cut out surly helps with temps… o like the flag flapping in the back. Makes me smile seeing that little rig rip by 75mph with America flying behind her!

Darkening the body lines I’d critical I believe to making any body look real.. too much makes it look fake… so be careful when you do it….

The rust, you really can’t do wrong… once again. I played around and made things happen out of pure lack of knowledge. Hahaha

You can leave the body jut to get more rust with natural drip lines…. You can make your own rust wash/paint by outing streak wool in a jar with vinegar…. Works well also but not like this stuff I have here…

Anyone else running the M2C servo saver eliminator in their road cars? I put it in the infraction…. I had to grind a little of it away because it was hitting my hing pin holder….
Thank you for building this for me, lets get the whole rig packaged up safely and shipped out to me asap mmmmmkay?

I am getting sleepy! Lmao…. It’ll ship in the morn……… 😴

Wow!! That looks awesome…looks like it’s straight out the field 😂
Thanks for all the details…looks like a long process but your results are great 😎

This is amazing! Always wanted to know how you achieved the look, I knew it was a s*** load of work, but turned out so awesome 👌 👍
Ingenuity and patience at its best 😎

Added the polo light kit… well some of it… front and rear lights… want to keep it simple and kind of authentic… also added a battery tray @3d-rc.myshopify.com made for me! Fits my 3s 2200mah battery like a glove… with a ‘eyeopenher’ logo on the inside, can’t beat that!
