Busted Motor cause?

Hello everyone, i was driving my outcast yesterday and it suddenly stopped. I went to check what happend, saw nothing at first, turned it on/off. After that it would run but it would turn very heavily, i was driving on 6s with the stock motor. Took the motor apart and found this(see picture). I already orderd a new motor, but now is my question what caused this? Overheating maybe? And can i prevent it the next time? Thanks in advance!

You bash in sand at all? I've seen some e-revo 2.0's do that on the traxxas forum. Not sure of the cause though.

Yes, i bash normally in the forest and on a field. It was practically covered in sand. Sure don't hope that's causing it...
