Max10 G2 80amp motor choices?

So this baby Max10 came with a Granite. I ran it with the 3652 motor for a 2s pack then sheared the pinion a few minutes into 3s. Currently have a 3660 3150kv stuffed in as it was sitting on a shelf.

At this point I want a 5mm motor shaft, which clearly puts me in 3660+ motor range. I would like a sensored motor, low and behold the 3665 hobbywing. The motor checks all the boxes except more amps than I think this esc will handle.

Is there any difference between the 80amp and 140amp versions? They look identical, weights are identical and wiring is identical?

Should I roll the dice on a 3665? Or is there something better? Swap the Esc to more amps and leave the 3660 Quicrun?

You can buy sensored motors in 3652 size with 5mm shafts, but I don't think that size motor is big enough for a 4wd truck. It will over heat.

3660 sounds about right and I'd guess that ESC will be fine if you don't go crazy on the gearing.

Run it til you smoke it. No need in spending money until/unless you have to. It may hold up just fine with conservative gearing.

I think 3660 should be fine on that esc, or even a 3665. The esc will go into protection mode if it needs to. As to 80a vs 140a, the 140a is rated to 4s vs the 80a max cell count of 3s.
I run an old HW SC8 80a esc on 4s with a 4268 2560kv motor in a 1/8 buggy, no problems. It's even been used on 4s in a 1/8 MT, Redcat Avalanche.. was fine there too.

Try before you buy.. I like the idea. I'm running an rtr max10 120a behind a 3670 2600kv in my Tekno Sct410.3, 3 and 4s, no problems. Motor gets warm on 4s, but otherwise runs great, maybe one day I'll add a motor fan, not likely though. 3s is the sweet spot in it for me.

I missed the mark a bit on kv choice for my sct410.3, 2600kv is a bit low for 3s, high for 4s.. it works though. I wanted to be able to run either, 3 or 4s. I have been running it with a 20t pinion, just enough speed on 3s but sometimes I want more. 4s gets me there..

Yeah, I think so. It came with the Avalanche XTE when I bought it for my wife in 2011. I think the motor was a 3660 or 3665, don't recall the kv but, that motor wasn't enough to handle 4s in the truck, went through 2 motors of that size then decided to upgrade to a 4074 2000kv. That lowly SC8 80a esc is still going to this day, 4s all the while.. The Avalanche and 2000kv ripper motor are dead and gone however, the Avalanche is in pieces, ripper motor cooked in my Mojave on 6s. My fault, wasn't watching temps..but it was really just a rebranded Quicrun 4074 2000kv motor so, good, but nothing special..

I think the run it till it burns up is a good idea, at this point I will stay put on the 3660 motor. Found out it was attacked by a dremel. Going to write this off.

You could get a new ESC if you think the Max10 isn't going to cut it. One of the better deals around is the Hobbywing Quicrun 10BL120 G2. It's a sensored ESC with an amperage rating of 120, and it only costs $50.

Good find! I think the G2 Quicrun is equal to the G1 Max10 it seems. I think it may even offer 7.4v BEC? I was pretty excited to find that my rtr version Max10 had 7.4v BEC. Heck, pretty sure I paid more than $50 for it too.

Yes, I just checked, I paid $66 for the rtr Max10 120a..back in 2022.

Yes, I just checked, I paid $66 for the rtr Max10 120a..back in 2022.

The 10BL120 has a 7.4V 5A BEC. If a vehicle doesn't have a servo that draws more than 5 amps, it is probably adequate.

Bought a 10BL120G2 from aliexpress sale March 9th and its currently some place between china and here. The 3660 I swapped in was for my Gorgon as is the missing 10BL120 esc. I was just hopeful that this baby MAX10 was not just salt in the wound at this point.
