No experience with drag racing but it might depend on your individual conditions. On full scale drag cars they have quick change rear ends to adjust to the conditions. If the surface is slick, maybe a higher gear to reduce slippage, if it's high-traction a lower gear might be better. I suspect is similar with RCs.

Most racer's (track, buggy, drag) that I've seen have a bunch of gears (and other parts) that they swap out as needed. It's all about tuning.
